How Playing Golf can help 900 Homeless Children
Each year, children need to have certain supplies to start and continue the school year. A high school backpack full of these supplies costs over $100. But what happens when the children are unable to obtain these necessary supplies? Cargo for Kids is a non-profit initiative of Cargo Largo that provides backpacks full of essential, grade-appropriate school supplies and hygiene items for students in need within our community. The mission is to ensure our kids have the basic necessities that help them through school. This year, we’re expanding our donations to include more hygiene items.
Since its inception, Cargo Largo, along with generous community volunteers and sponsors, has provided students with well over $180,000 worth of supplies. Last year, Cargo for Kids provided for approximately 800 children. During the 2018-2019 school year, the Independence School District estimates 900 children will require assistance.
On June 15th, 2018, Cargo for Kids will host its 7th Annual Cargo for Kids Charity Golf Tournament! This tournament includes complimentary breakfast provided by Hy-Vee, lunch provided by Outback Steakhouse, great raffle and door prizes, and a putting contest with a chance to putt for $5,000! Proceeds from the tournament go directly to support Cargo for Kids initiatives (no administrative or overhead costs). In July, Cargo Largo will host a community-wide volunteer event to stuff backpacks with grade-specific supplies. The backpacks are then given to the School District to confidentially distribute to students throughout the year.
